I had the date April 2nd circled on my calendar since the season began in December. That’s right—a true day off—no game, no practice, no meetings, no nothing! Just relaxing—swimming in the hotel pool, and getting a little sun!
A win over the Orlando Magic the night before on April 1st, got my juices going and whet my appetite for the big day.
Imagine my surprise the next morning when the sound of a jackhammer woke me up at 9 AM. I thought I was dreaming—then I came to my senses. I walked to the window and looked out and to my big surprise there was NO water in the pool! There were only workers who were jackhammering and sandblasting away to their hearts content.
I then called downstairs and found out the pool was closed for the next week. Bummer.
So what to do—I hip-hopped down to Starbucks and got their new chocolate/cinnamon loaf. I then coupled it with a diet Pepsi and was on my way to recovery. Yum.
I then proceeded to do an hour of work preparing my Nuggets board for the upcoming Hornets game. Of course you may know that Ty Lawson was Denver’s leading scorer against Orlando with 25 points, but did you know that he had 9 assists and only one turnover? That’s gooood!
Also, interesting—Kosta Koufos had the Nuggets best plus/minus rating in the game at +19. Starting center JaVale McGee had the lowest plus/minus rating for the game at -19.
Boy, it is fun to watch Kenneth Faried play basketball. In the last two minutes of the Magic win; Kenneth had two blocks, a rebound, and a dunk to seal the victory. My partner, Scott Hastings said that we should make up t-shirts with Denver’s newest law firm name: Block-Block-Rebound-Jam. CEO: Manimal!
So after getting the Nuggets roster ready, I took a break and went down to the Fitness Center to work out. I had decided to go twice as long since swimming later in the pool wasn’t an option.
I was alone for the first 45 minutes on the stair-stepper watching NBA highlights and bits of the old show Las Vegas. Have you seen the TV series? One of the stars, Molly Sims, does the bunny hop in the pea patch with the best of them!
Then Nuggets assistant coach John Welch showed up in the gym. Coach is a great guy and is known for his grueling workouts and outstanding player development.
As we worked out, I learned that John had heard (bench is close to broadcast position) the Orlando TV announcers hammering the Denver defense into submission. I was surprised. Scott and I point out the weaknesses of the other players and teams but rarely hammer the franchise. The only exception is lack of effort—that is fair game for either team.
Coach Welch does a terrific job in coaching and improving many of the teams’ players. His favorite, I believe, is Aaron Afflalo. After a slow start this season, Aaron decided to re-kindle his pregame tune-ups with Welch and it has paid off. AAA had a beautiful month of March and is now averaging a career hi 14 ppg.
We also talked about two of the rookies on the team. I told him that I thought Jordan Hamilton was a keeper and should be a full time rotation player next year. He agreed. He is also high on Julyan Stone—he said all JS has to do to play more is shoot better! That improvement could come this summer.
After the workout, I decided to take a walk out to the lake, find a park bench, and read my book. This is news because some say I don’t get out much on the road. Ha! That day I did. I walked to the park, and on the way I noticed how clean the city of Orlando is. It is the cleanest city I have ever seen. Not a scrap of anything anywhere. Congratulations to the city managers or whoever!
OK—got to the park and it was beautiful. The only drawback was that there were NO park benches to sit on! None. They must have thrown them away in the trashcan with everything else!
So after a brisk walk-thru, off I went to find lunch. And it wasn’t easy. Somehow I kept walking down streets that had no restaurants! I finally stumbled onto the WaiTiki. There I had lunch and read my book “The Burglar in the Library” by Lawrence Block. It’s a murder mystery series starring Bernie Rhodenbarr, the ultimate burglar. Check it out.
While at lunch, I learned that my daughter Grace and her VB team had finished 3rd in a big tournament in Baltimore. I called and told her how proud I was.
Back in my room I decided to write this blog. It’s running long and I should end it, but the day isn’t over yet! I have a radio interview with Blake Olson, and the NCAA Championship game to report on!
Until next time.
