Look out Tim Tebow…(and not for #16) Gabriel Landeskog is taking Denver by storm.
Have you ever had the flu? It’s horrible. Your body hurts, your stomach is flipping, and your best friend is a porcelain mirror. Most people choose to lay in bed and watch “The Price is Right” followed by endless of hours of bad re-runs like “The Goonies” or “Fletch Lives”. Not #92. Nope. You know what he did? He put on the sweater, literally decided to sweat it out, and scored the game-winner in Overtime against the Anaheim Ducks on Monday Night.
No big deal. Just another day in the life of a rookie in the NHL. Or is it? Is it a Calder-“esque” type of year for Landeskog? I think so.
The trophy is named in honor of Frank Calder, the former President of the National Hockey League from its inception in 1917 to his death in 1943. After Calder's death in 1943 the trophy was re-named the Calder Memorial Trophy. It’s given to the rookie of the year, the player that has the biggest impact on his team and in the National Hockey League. Some of the former winners of this trophy include Ray Bourque, Peter Stastny, Mario Lemieux, Martin Brodeur, Peter Forsberg, Alexander Ovechkin, and Evgeni Malkin. Last time I checked, they all turned out to be pretty good players in the NHL.
“Tebowing” was fun. I admit it, I did it on the streets of Las Vegas for an entire weekend until Tom Brady drove 80 yards in the first two minutes of their Playoff game. It wasn’t quite as funny after that. However, people from all over the world were doing it, because of the heroics that Tim Tebow provided as the quarterback for the Denver Broncos.
Don’t look now, but Gabriel Landeskog is doing the same thing. He’s tied for the rookie lead with 19 goals. He leads all rookies with 235 shots on goal, his +20 rating keeps him on the ice in all situations (power play or penalty kill) and he now has 4 game winning goals.
So next time you’re on the streets of downtown Denver, in the Pepsi Center concourse, in your living room watching the game, or grabbing some coffee in the office, join me, and do some Landeskoging!
