During the past thirty years, I have made a living by talking. I have always been a voracious reader and have secretly wanted to write stories. Throughout the years, I have written some articles for sports team magazines but nothing that would make John Grisham nervous. This is a great opportunity to write a regular blog through the Altitude website.
Six years of working with Altitude has given me an opportunity to broadcast many sports from drag racing to bull riding. My family is a big supporter of local teams, so we try to go see as many professional and college games as we can. Of course hockey fans know me best from broadcasts of Colorado Avalanche games on radio and television for fifteen years. My first blog will be about the Avalanche, but I am also looking forward to writing about other sports in
It is a very interesting time in the Colorado Avalanche franchise history. The Avs arrived in 1995 with a team full of superstars that immediately made an impact on sports fans in the area. It was easy for fans to fall in love with a team that was a winner right away and had a lot of players with dynamic personalities. It also makes sense that long-time fans have such fond memories of the first nine years when the Avalanche contended for the Stanley Cup every season and made dramatic trades that brought in the best players in the NHL. It was a whirlwind time that will never be forgotten.
While those days are the glory days for the Avs, there is a new era building. I enjoy talking about past Avalanche seasons but I am also very aware of what the Avalanche is building toward now. I have two young children who play hockey and either go to or watch almost all of the Avalanche games. They don’t have any memories of the past great teams. Peter Forsberg, Claude Lemieux and Patrick Roy are just names that they hear me talk about. They, like a lot of new fans, have their own heroes. My six-year-old son has picked Matt Duchene as his favorite player. My nine-year-old daughter has her own favorites on the current team. When we play street hockey, the kids in the neighborhood pretend they are a player from this current team.
I hope you have been out to see a game or at least have watched on Altitude; this team is exciting. They skate fast, work hard and are winning games. It is fun to look back in the past and relish the wonderful times, but there are now new heroes emerging for Avalanche fans and the future looks bright.
